Endotoxin or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a frequent contaminant of plasmid DNA and protein prepared from bacteria, and can also be present in other purified proteins that have been exposed to traces of bacteria during their production. Endotoxin must be removed from DNA or protein prior to in vivo applications to avoid unwanted inflammatory responses. Endotoxin can be measured with high sensitivity with the limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) assay, which was accepted by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1983.
